Have-a-go-hero customers foiled a gunpoint robbery at a Wakefield garage.
Two men pounced on the alleged gunman who walked into the Co-op petrol station on Horbury Road, Wakefield demanding cash and threatening terrified female staff at around 6am on Thursday morning.

The two customers wrestled the man to the floor.

They then held him until police arrived at the Whinney Moor Service Station, opposite the Duke of Wellington pub.

A 20-year-old Wakefield man was arrested on suspicion of robbery and was last night being held for questioning by detectives.

One of the men who tackled the alleged raider walked off without leaving his contact details – and now police want him to get in touch to help with their investigation.

A garage worker, who didn't want to be named, said: "He had a balaclava on which came off in the struggle. The customers held him in the storeroom and restrained him as best they could."

The garage was closed until 1.30pm yesterday as scenes of crimes police officers examined the area.

Police say no-one was injured during the incident.

Detective Inspector Paul O'Dowd of Wakefield CID, told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "The customers who apprehended the suspect acted in a very public spirited way despite putting themselves in danger and thankfully no one was injured. "I would like to speak with the customer who left without leaving his details so I would urge him to get in touch with Wakefield CID."

The customer, or anyone with information, should contact Wakefield CID on 0845 60 60 606 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
