But now Rebecca Tomlinson – daughter of cancer heroine Jane – has been nominated for an award of her own.

Student Rebecca, 20, is in line for Cosmopolitan magazine's Ultimate Heroine award for her determination to keep her mum's legacy alive.
Following Jane's tragic death last year, Rebecca pledged to carry on her mum's good work and, like Jane before her, she has taken part in several endurance events.

And she has clearly inherited her mum's true grit and spirit.
In April, she ran the London Marathon in three hours and 45 minutes and in August, along with dad Mike, she rode 1,400 miles from John O'Groats to Lands End – all to raise funds for her mum's charity, Jane's Appeal.

Next year she plans to take part in a gruelling triathlon – an endurance event of running, cycling and swimming – several of which her mother completed while suffering from terminal cancer before she died in 2007.

On top of all that, Rebecca is also helping dad Mike and the rest of her family organise the hugely successful annual Leeds 10K Run for All.

Rebecca is nominated in the Ultimate Heroine category of Cosmopolitan's Ultimate Women of the Year Awards and will be invited to a glittering London ceremony in November.

Announcing her nomination, Cosmopolitan said of her: "Rebecca is away at university, fulfilling her own dreams and becoming the kind of young woman who would make any parent proud. Her dad Mike is full of love and admiration for her. And he knows Rebecca's mum Jane, who the nation took to their hearts, would be too."

Award judges include Prime Minister's wife Sarah Brown, TV presenter Fearne Cotton and singer Jamelia.

The awards aim to recognise inspirational women, from those who have shown strength and courage to those who have followed their dreams to be the "best they can be".

The winners will be revealed at a ceremony at Banqueting House on
November 5.

* Jane's Appeal raises funds for cancer and children's charities and has so far raked in more than £2m for good causes.
