He is also chief executive of the cancer charity Jane's Appeal, which has raised £2.6m to date and was founded with his wife in 2002.
He also heads the Leeds 10k Race For All.
Mr Tomlinson, 48, father of Suzanne, Rebecca and Steven, and a grandfather, said: "Since Jane's death it has become clear to me that continuing to work while running the charity, Jane's Appeal, has become increasingly difficult."
The decision to leave the bank and concentrate on the charity has also been taken to allow more time with his family.
One of the first tasks Mr Tomlinson has is to find new premises for the expanding Jane's Appeal and is looking for office space in and around Leeds City Centre. He also hopes to raise £5m for the appeal.
Jane, CBE, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2000. Before her death in 2007 she raised £1.8m.
