A group of allotment holders in East Ardsley has been left high and dry as the country faces soaring temperatures, claims a councillor.
With the Met Office warning of a heatwave with temperatures reaching as high as 300C, some plot holders at Common Lane allotments in East Ardsley are in urgent need of a permanent water supply.

They face their second summer without a tap and Coun Karen Renshaw (Lab, Ardsley and Robin Hood) is calling on Leeds City Council to tackle the problem.

She said she was assured the work to install a supply would be carried out in the spring but nothing happened.

Coun Renshaw said: "These allotment holders have been patiently waiting for a simple tap for the last two years.

"We are told time and time again that the money is there and the work has been scheduled.

"So far all we've seen is a string of broken promises from the council. These residents have worked really hard all year and will be so disappointed if, once again, their plants are ruined because the council has not installed a water supply, as promised.

"I am calling on the council to act now to resolve the situation. We have already had a dry early summer, and, as it is set to get even hotter over the coming months, it could soon be too late. "

A council spokesman said: "These allotments have had a water supply for many years.

"However we increased the number of plots available to help meet public demand and it is these three additional plots which are waiting for the water supply to be extended.

"We are aware of the need for this to happen as soon as possible but, because of the high demand for this type of work, we have not been able to meet requests as quickly as we would have liked. We will begin work to extend the supply as soon as we can."
