Darren Peter Sedgwick: Rothwell man remanded to Crown Court on rape charge

A Rothwell man has appeared in court after being arrested and charged with a rape in Ossett.

Darren Peter Sedgwick, 28, of Haigh Terrace, Rothwell, appeared before Wakefield magistrates on Monday after police investigating the alleged sex attack swooped to arrest him on Saturday, November 1.

Wearing a blue Leeds United jumper, blonde-haired Sedgwick spoke only to confirm his personal details during the hearing.

Prosecutor Richard Ogden told the court that it was alleged Sedgwick had raped the woman at an isolated industrial estate off Healey Road, Ossett. At 3.15am the woman flagged down a police patrol on Owl Lane in Gawthorpe, and said she had been attacked.

Police launched a major investigation after the alleged sex attack and issued an e-fit picture of a man they wished to speak to. After extensive inquiries, they arrested Sedgwick at his home on Saturday.

Defending, Emma Radley made an application for bail which was denied my magistrates.

Sedgwick was remanded in custody and will now appear at Leeds Crown Court on Monday, November 10, via video link.
