Among the beneficiaries were Macmillan Cancer Support, the Yorkshire
Cancer Centre, Sport Aided Research for Kids (Sparks) and Jane's own appeal which distributes money to children's and cancer charities.

Jane's husband Mike, who organises the event in his late wife's memory, said he was thrilled with the amount raised.

He said: "It's brilliant, especially considering this was only our second year. People really put their hearts and souls into it and we'd like to thank everyone who took part."

Jane and Mike's son Steven, 11, added: "Mum would have been really, really proud. It's what she aimed to do, what she wanted.

"I think she would be surprised that it has become so big so quickly, but she would have been really pleased because this is the event that she wanted to put on."

The giant total was revealed at the launch party for next year's event which is set to be even bigger – up to 15,000 people are expected to take part on Sunday June 21, making it one of the biggest runs in the UK.

It was officially launched by Leeds-born TV presenter Gabby Logan and United legend Eddie Gray, who also plans to run himself. Eddie told the
YEP: "I won't be trying to break any records – I'll just be happy to get round!"
