The puppy, who lives with his owner Catherine White and her two children Elizabeth, eight, and Matthew, three, crossed a busy road several times after jumping through a conifer in his garden on Home Lea.

He was eventually captured by staff at Select Hairdressers on Haigh Road, after escaping from builders on nearby Wood Lane, who tried to catch the nippy five-month-old.

His rescue was a big relief for the White family, who are still in mourning for their two-year-old cat Katie, who died when she was hit by a car on Wood Lane two weeks ago.

Catherine, 33, said: "We were so pleased to find Jake because you never know what could happen. He could have been killed.
"We're so grateful for the hairdressers for rescuing him and looking after him.

"Jake's a friendly and mischievous puppy and he's very playful. He's escaped before but since his little adventure, we've bought a chain for him to wear in the garden."
