Leeds police issue statement after video of disorder in Rothwell goes viral

Police have issued a statement after viral footage of a disorder in Leeds was shared on social media.

West Yorkshire Police has confirmed they are investigating the incident, which happened in Third Avenue, Rothwell, on Sunday afternoon (October 22).

Footage widely circulated online appears to show an altercation between police officers and members of the public. One officer appears to deploy pepper spray during the incident. A referral has been made to the force’s Professional Standards department, which assesses complaints made about the conduct of West Yorkshire Police officers and staff, the force confirmed in a statement.

A spokesperson said: “West Yorkshire Police is aware of footage circulating on social media around some disorder on Third Avenue, Rothwell on Sunday afternoon.

“The matter is being investigated and body worn footage currently being reviewed. A referral has been made to the Professional Standards Directorate.”
