A special ceremony took place at the Holy Trinity Church on Church Street to celebrate King Henry IV granting the charter to the town, allowing Rothwell to hold a weekly market as well as two fairs each year.

These fairs continue to this day.

A replica charter was handed over as part of the celebration, which was attended by many esteemed figures, including Lord and Lady Newby of Rothwell, the mayor and mayoress of Leeds Frank and Sheila Robinson, and the Archdeacon of Leeds, The Ven. Peter Burrows.

Knights from the Armouries Museum accompanied a full procession of highranking officials before the service.

After the ceremony, medieval entertainment was provided by local schools and church organisations.

The ceremony on Sunday, June 21, was part of the Rothwell 600 celebrations, which continue all this year.

Other planned events include a flower festival at Oulton Church this summer, a Horticultural and Robin Hood Fair in September, a Hallowe'en festival in October and a special concert at Blackburn Hall in December.

The first recorded mention of Rothwell was in the Domesday Book in 1086.
