Clawson converted to nose Leeds in front and Atkinson’s second touchdown made it 10-5 at the interval, but Watkins cut the gap – with his 196th goal of the season – early in the second period. Defences dominated after that and both teams resorted to long-range pot shots, Hardisty and Syd Hynes missing with drop goal attempts for Leeds and Watkins sending a penalty off-target, the wind blowing the ball over as he kicked. Clawson was taken off late on and Holmes sealed Leeds’ victory – and a £5,000 winner’s cheque – with a 76th-minute penalty goal.
