Health bosses continue to urge the public not to panic and are keen to stress that as we enter the seasonal flu season, many such admissions will not necessarily be cases of swine flu.

Paul Johnstone, director of public health at NHS Yorkshire and the Humber, added: "Over the last few weeks we have sadly seen an increase in the number of deaths of people who had swine flu in our region.

"These patients were in 'at risk' groups and had significant underlying health problems.

"There is no need to panic but this underlines the importance of all those in at risk groups to have the vaccination when contacted by their GP."

Overall the number of people catching swine flu in England is falling. There were an estimated 46,000 new recorded cases in the last week, down from 53,000 the week before.

There has also been a drop in the number of people in hospital, from
783 to 753.

A total of 154 of those being cared for are in intensive care.
In England the number of deaths linked to the virus has risen quite substantially to 163, up from 142 deaths, confirmed as of last week.

Doctors continue to advise flu sufferers to always use a tissue to catch sneezes, dispose of used tissues and regularly wash their hands.

Those with persistent symptoms are urged to call the freephone National Pandemic Flu Service on 0800 1 513 100.
